Gaia’s Workshop is Crafting Unique Oak Chopping Blocks

To begin with, Gaia’s Work provides a unique experience with each oak chopping block. Firstly, every branch cut and hand-carved motif is distinct, showcasing the natural beauty of the wood. Moreover, the intricate designs, resembling paintings, encapsulate the essence of nature, making each piece a true work of art. Our process begins with careful selection. To start, we hand-pick oak tree branches that possess exceptional grain patterns and a rustic-wild edge, ensuring each block is visually stunning. Furthermore, to enhance durability, the branches undergo a power-washing and air-drying process that can take up to two months. Finally, we retain the natural waney edge on the long side while removing the bark.

We cut the branches to size and place them in moulds, carefully arranging them for optimal aesthetic appeal. We then pour multiple layers of epoxy resin in different colours, creating a random, unique pattern that mimics nature and exposes the beauty of the wood. After sanding, washing, and drying to raise the grain, we hand-carve a motif or design into the board. For paint-like motifs, we employ a similar process, using carving tools to apply different epoxy colours until the design looks like a painting. Instead of using brush strokes, we use carving tools. Finally, we sand the surface progressively to a fine 3000 grit finish.

Finally, the finished board is soaked in mineral oil. We hope you enjoy using these hand-crafted pieces as much as we enjoy creating them.
